1.6.2000 SecurityVoIP now Possible From Behind Firewalls
Net Talk, the Internet voice chat firm, has enhanced its Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology to run across firewall security systems.

English version
Steve Tover, the firm's CEO, told Newsbytes that, although the VoIP client application runs in Java, it also supports a UDP TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) stream that allows the IP data stream to "jump" across most firewall systems, but without compromising the firewall's security.

"This is an important step for companies that have always wanted to use VoIP to save on their international telephone calling costs, but have always hit the problem of firewalls blocking the VoIP transmissions," he said.

As well as supporting a flexible Java and TCP/IP data stream, Tover said that the Net Talk technology also runs via a server, rather than on a peer-to-peer basis, as most VoIP client applications do.

"That allows us to use a much more reliable VoIP data stream," he said, adding that, coupled with the use of GSM (global system for mobile communications) cellular codec technology, the call quality achieved on corporate Net Talk VoIP connections is superior to many VoIP client applications currently on the market.

The advanced codec system, he said, is so good that it will run across a 28,800 bits per second (bps) modem connection into the Internet.

"This is important for companies with staff scattered around the globe, since it means they can hook into a company conference call using the Net Talk system, using a laptop plus modem connection into the Internet, even from a hotel room," he said.

Tover admits that some firewall system setups will block even the new Net Talk VoIP technology. Where users have an absolute top-level security setting, such as where they even have to use a proxy server to access the Web, Net Talk will not work.

"Most users can use the technology, and, for them, the cost savings of using VoIP are immense. We've had two major international companies with thousands of staff around the world testing the technology and it has saved them a lot of money," he said.

Pricing on the advanced Net Talk VoIP service is still being finalized, but Tover said that the payback period for most companies will be relatively short.
